happening at 6pm on Thursday, March 4th and will remain on display
throughout the rest of the month for those of you who cannot make it to
the show. Don’t miss this opportunity to discover the local talent of
Marty Garcia.

Martin first realized his artistic talent while growing up in a family
of six in Kerrville, Texas. Throughout his primary education, he
continued to grow artistically and became very active in athletics.
After High School, he pursued college football, but found himself
devoting the majority of his time to the study of art. In 1998, he
received a BFA in painting form the University of Texas at San Antonio
and relocated to Austin to make a living as an artist.
In 1999 he as fortunate enough to help establish the commercial art
company Blue Genie Art. Here, he collaborated on variety of projects
including the Bob Bullock Museum, the Mayan House, a mural for Andy
Roddick and various south Congress Avenue sculptures to myriad of
murals, sculpture, displays, booths, backdrops, props, casting, mold
making, art cars and more. Blue Genie Art has been a springboard for
knowledge spanning creation to construction, while at the same time
serving as an influential and supportive element in his personal art.
In 2005, he was blessed with the opportunity to work with A.I.P.P. (Art
in Public Places) on the A.B. Cantu mural and the 7th Street Obelisco
sculpture project (design phase complete, project completion date 2010).
In 2006 completed the two murals “The Austin Flow” for the Domain for
Simon Property.

In 2007-09 he completed five murals for Mathis I.S.D. and was art
director for the 21st century after school program. The process of
creating public art has been a great vehicle for understanding the
magnitude of the artwork and who is to benefit from it. The advantages
of working in large scale and the exploration of using different mediums
to produce art have aided him to constantly develop as an artist. Garcia
says that public art is his favorite due to the fact that everyone gets
to enjoy public art and you often get to observe the creative process
that went into it, making you a part of that art that will always be a
part of you and the place it resides. Basically, the public takes
ownership of the art.
Marty’s favorite artists are Michelangelo because of the figurative
style that Garcia is known for. He’s also been heavily influenced by
Mexican Meuralist, Diego Rivera, and has also been impressed with
simplicity of Andy Warhol and his drastic influence on modern pop
culture.
Marty is currently working on the illustrations for a comic book he
wrote, as well as a children’s book called ‘Barefoot Girl’ whose
character is based around his 5 year old twin girls Carmella and Pilar.
